The Lab is an output of the National Science Challenge Urban Wellbeing research programme Hurihanga. Place-based partners are Ngāti Whakaue, a Rotorua hapū, and Te Tatau o Te Arawa, an iwi-led Council-partnered governance group. Te Tatau’s mandate is to forward a vision for the sustainable wellbeing of people, culture and place within Aotearoa’s te Rohe o Te Arawa (Arawa region).

Tūhononga: Co-occupying with Earth and Sky

Matangireia Yates-Francis.

Tūhononga questions how we might regenerate living and builtenvironments at this time in the Anthropocene and proposes successfulco-occupancy with taiao (the natural world) as the answer. It re-imagines howwe can co-exist on earth between Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatūānuku (EarthMother). As a long-term vertical pā (settlement) this project excavates andtranslates traditional narratives regarding co-occupancy with nature, modellinga regenerative living architecture that attends to physical and spiritualrealms.
