2021 POST-GRAD STUDIO for the M. Arch Year Five Thesis // HE PUNA KĀINGA ORA. REGENERATIVE HOUSING LAB
Our 2021 post-graduate studio lab tests out transformational regenerative architectures for holistic social, cultural, and ecological wellbeing. The Lab is an output of the National Science Challenge Urban Wellbeing research programme Hurihanga. Place-based partners are Ngāti Whakaue, a Rotorua hapū, and TeTatau o Te Arawa, an Iwi-led Council-partnered governance group. Te Tatau’s mandate is to forward a vision for sustainable wellbeing of people, culture and place within Aotearoa’s te Rohe o Te Arawa (Arawa region).
Thesis Project. Tūhononga: Co-occupying with Earth and Sky // Matangireia Yates-Francis.
Tūhononga architecturally re-imagines how we can co-exist on earthbetween Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatūānuku (Earth Mother). As a long-term vertical pā (settlement) this project excavates and translates traditional narratives regarding co-occupancy with nature, modelling a regenerative living architecture that attends to physical and spiritual realms.
